Uncompromising Security

Even when your notebook is off, your data is still secure.

Having your notebook fall into the wrong hands is not an option. And the cost of such a breach isn't limited to your hardware. Your data is your business. And that is why HP secures not just your notebook from theft, but also the data on your notebook and access to it. Security is built-in at all entry points – even your USB ports and your screen can be protected.

HP ProtectTools - The Security Manager

HP ProtectTools Security Manager is an extensible framework that allows you to manage your security features from a single console. Security software modules give you the flexibility to design a security solution that meets your needs and allows you to make modifications over time.

Unauthorized Access

HP Biometric Fingerprint Sensor

HP Biometric Fingerprint Sensor Use your fingerprint instead of a password to log-on to Windows. Most HP Business Notebook PCs offer the HP Biometric Fingerprint Sensor as a standard feature. Manage your fingerprint settings quickly and easily in Credential Manager for HP ProtectTools.

BIOS Configuration for HP ProtectTools provides an easy to use alternative to the pre-boot BIOS configuration utility (known as the F10 Setup) to help protect a system from the moment power is turned on. The embedded security chip enhanced Drivelock* helps protect a hard drive from unauthorized access, even after it is removed from the system.

Integrated Smart Card reader

Integrated Smart Card reader Most of HP Business Notebook PCs come with an integrated Smart Card reader as a standard feature. Smart Cards provide multifactor authentication for enhanced security.

HP Business Notebooks support Smart Card authentication in the Windows as well as in the pre-boot environment to further protect against unauthorized access.

Java Card Security for HP ProtectTools allows you to configure an HP ProtectTools Java Card for Windows as well as pre-boot authentication.

Smart Card Security for HP ProtectTools allows you to enable optional Smart Card authentication before the operating system loads, providing an additional layer of protection against unauthorized use of the PC. You can also configure seperate Smart Cards for an administrator and a user, and easily backup and restore credentials stored on the Smart Card.

HP Privacy Filter* - NEW

HP Privacy Filter* - NEW Narrow the viewing angle of your notebook display so that people on the other side see a dark, blank screen. This increases your security and privacy, especially in constrained spaces, without blurring or distorting your display.

* Available on HP Compaq nc6400 Business Notebook only

Theft (Data & Physical)

Drive encryption for HP ProtectTools encodes every bit of information on your hard drive volume so that it becomes unreadable to an unauthorized person. This feature helps ensure that:
  • Sensitive information cannot be accessed if the notebook or hard drive is lost or stolen.
  • Your critical personal and business data stored on your hard drive is safer without your intervention.

Device Access Manager

Not everyone who can access sensitive information should necessarily be able to copy or print that data. Instead, you may want to limit some users to a "read only" status for information that is stored on a notebook's drives. Device Access Manager for HP ProtectTools extends control over the data house on the different kinds of media connected to a system. Using the Device Access Manager simple configuration option, you can limit access to:
  • All USB devices to administrators only
  • Removable media to administrators and power users only
  • Optical drives to administrators and backup operators
  • Serial and parallel ports to administrators and power users only

TPM Enhanced DriveLock

TPM Enhanced DriveLock Most HP Business Notebook PCs include a TPM embedded security chip, which provides enhanced data, credential, and email protection via enhanced encryption.

TPM Enhanced DriveLock uses the TPM to generate an extremely strong password that locks your hard drive.

Personal Secure Drive

The Personal Secure Drive (PSD) is an encrypted volume that is mounted and shows up as any other disk volume does. The contents of the drive are encrypted using a key generated by the TPM, making the encrypted data inaccessible if the hard drive is removed from the notebook. This feature is particularly useful for very sensitive business data such as financial information, personnel data, and confidential business plans.

The PSD can occupy the entire hard disk minus 5GB for system files, so you can encrypt as much or as little of your sensitive information as necessary.

Embedded security for HP ProtectTools uses a TPM-embedded security chip designed to work with a growing number of third-party software solutions to help protect sensitive data stored locally on a PC.

Notebook solutions

Notebook solutions

HP offers support for Kensington Slimline Security Locks on our entire line of business notebook PCs to keep your notebook and its peripherals from walking away. These locks are industry standard so you can purchase a new lock with your notebook, utilize locks you may already have, and quickly and easily find replacement locks when you need them.

Desktop and workstation solutions

Desktops and workstations are a substantial investment and you want to protect them. HP makes it easy with a collection of optional security solutions to help protect your investment:

• A solenoid hood lock that eliminates the need for a physical key by making the chassis lockable through a password. You can also lock and unlock the chassis remotely over the network. The lock attaches to your system and acts as a cover lock. This locking solution is only available from HP on select desktops and workstations.
• Support for Kensington locks. Use industry-standard locks to tether systems to a desk so they won't find their way out of your offices and into the hands of thieves.
• A rear port controller that clips into the back of a computer to secure input devices and prevent the removal or addition of cables on the back.
• An integrated work center that not only saves space by integrating the monitor and the PC, but also works with a standard Kensington lock to secure both the monitor and PC at once.
• A wall-mounting bracket that you can use to mount a system to a wall or under a desk to reduce risk of theft and keep the system out of site.

Network Access

Credential Manager is the glue that brings the different security technologies together to create a behavior. You can specify how the different available security technologies work together and create a unique authentication method, including alternatives to passwords when logging on to Microsoft Windows. You can also take advantage of a single sign-on capability that automatically remembers credentials for websites, applications, and protected network resources.

Lifecycle Management

End-of-life disposal

Deleted files aren't actually wiped clean from your system's hard drive. The system removes the markers that identify the data and the space on the drive is available to the system for storage again, but the actual data still remains.

When you are ready to redeploy a notebook or dispose of it, you need to be sure that the data is properly erased. HP Disk Sanitizer is designed to help remove data from your hard drive using a published U.S. Department of Defense Algorithm - NSA Certified.
HP Disk Sanitizer:

  • Is OS-independent so doesn't leave traces of data behind for users to find with another operating system.
  • Eliminates the need to purchase third-party software to erase hard drives prior to recycling, reassigning, returning, or otherwise disposing of your hardware.

HP Backup & Recovery

HP Backup & Recovery HP Local Client Recovery Solution - Offering either automatic or manual backups, HP provides simple solutions for data backup and recovery. It lets you create factory software recovery CDs or DVDs, back up and recover systems or individual files and folders, and create or manage restore points and snapshots.
