Windows® operating system
Windows Vista® (4–8 hours)
Note: HP also can provide training on Windows® XP and other operating systems.
This class gives participants an overview of the features and functions of the new Microsoft Windows Vista®
operating system and highlights specific features relevant to the use of an HP personal computer. The goal of this
course is to enable attendees to get the most out of their equipment and to gain comfort and familiarity with basic
end user tasks in the Vista operating system.
Upon completion of this module, participants will have an understanding of the Windows Vista operating system and
pre-loaded applications on the tablet. Topics covered will include the following.
- The new Vista Interface
- New Desktop, Aero, Taskbar, Flip 3-D
- The new Start Menu
- New Windows Explorer and search features
- Gadgets
- Vista for portables in general
- Mobility center
- Power management
- Presentation mode
- Networking changes vs. XP
- Microsoft Windows Vista tablet features (if applicable)
- Using the New Input Panel
- Handwriting training
- Pen Flicks
- Other tablet PC improvements
- Use of Microsoft Journal
- Taking notes, use of drawing features
- Converting notes to text using lasso tool, the Tablet Input Panel
- Importing/exporting content to /from other applications (Office, HTML, etc.)
- Other Vista Notes (Briefly, demo only)

Microsoft Productivity Applications
Core Office 2007 (2–4 hours)
Note: HP can provide training on previous versions of Microsoft Office.
This class is aimed at general end users of the Office 2007 application suite. The class will focus primarily on
differences between Office 2007 and previous versions of the Microsoft Office productivity suite.
- Microsoft Word
- The new ribbon and user interface
- Creating and saving documents
- Formatting documents
- Editing and review
- Tablet-specific features
- “Where did it go?” feature review
- Excel and PowerPoint
- Outlook 2007 (if applicable)
- Utilizing the new interface
- Views, sorting, and filters
- Using the calendar feature of Outlook
Introduction to Microsoft OneNote 2007 (1–2 hours)
This class will both cover items new to OneNote 2007, as well and provide an interactive lesson on how OneNote might be
used in an academic situation.
- The new OneNote structure
- Creating notebooks, sections, pages, sub pages
- New search features
- New drawing and table features
- Using OneNote
- Taking notes by keyboard or pen
- Selection and formatting
- Importing graphics, web sites, text, etc. from other sources
- Recording voice
- Cross reference
- Sharing notebooks
- Integration with the rest of Office 2007
Using Microsoft Student with Encarta (1–2 hours)
The goal of this module is to learn to utilize Microsoft Student with Encarta to its fullest potential. This module
will be focused on how to integrate student-centered learning and research techniques with the suite of tools
contained in Student. Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
- Navigate through tools and menus within the MS Student interface.
- Utilize enhanced search features of Encarta and web-based content.
- Use templates to develop written projects and reports.
- Use translators and web links to aid study of foreign languages.
- Access Encarta’s library of disc based and web- based resources.
Digital storytelling with Microsoft PhotoStory 3 and Microsoft MovieMaker (1–2 hours)
The goal of this module is to enable teachers to use digital storytelling in any subject area and with any grade
level or skill set of students. Upon completion of this module participants will be able to:
- Find examples of digital storytelling other teachers and students have created.
- Develop a presentation that includes photos, music, voice narration, and effects.
- Develop a presentation that includes video clips, visual transitions, and video effects.
- Share presentations via hard disk, server, web, or email.
Focus on literature with Microsoft Reader (1–2 hours)
The goal of this module is to highlight the power of the Microsoft Reader software and identify how it can be used
to enhance reading and literacy skills in a variety of subject areas. Upon completion of this module participants
will be able to:
- Download and install Microsoft Reader software and its associated plug-ins.
- Find and collect free eBooks that can be downloaded to use with Microsoft Reader.
- Read, bookmark, highlight, and annotate eBooks.
- Use the read aloud feature of eBooks.
- Convert text from any Office application into an eBook.
